The history of philosophy has been haunted by a singular dilemma manifesting itself in two ways. Metaphysically, it manifests as the One/Many problem: if Being is primarily one, then how do we account for multiplicity, if, however, it is fundamentally many, then how can there be any unity, which is required both for knowledge and for things to exist as things? Epistemologically, the problem manifests in Subject/Object Dualism: if knowledge is the function of a rational agent's consciousness, then how can we bridge the gap between the subjective and objective worlds? Heidegger argues that the traditional ontology of "substance" which gives rise to these problems, and in response, Heidegger reevaluates the fundamental conception of Being, re-discovering the ontological significance of relationality; an ontological significance which, historically, is reflected in Neoplatonic thought.Examining this re-discovery is my core project, and this requires engaging in two interrelated tasks. The fundamental task is to show that Heidegger is, in fact, recovering a relational ontology. This requires a close examination of Heidegger's work to show that his ontology entails such a primordial relationality. I do this through a close reading of Being and Time which shows this relational ontology in inchoate form. Heidegger develops this relational ontology further, although still in implicit terms, in his later works. However, in order to show that Heidegger is recovering a relational ontology, a preliminary task is required. This has two parts. The first involves demonstrating that "relation", following Aristotle's definition of "relation" as dependent upon the things related, has been misconstrued. Determinate being requires a more primordial understanding of relation as grounding the relata rather than depending upon them. The second part requires a historical analysis of two parallel ontologies: the ontology of substance, following Parmenides, and the ontology of relationality, following Anaximander and Heraclitus, which later develops into Neoplatonism.From this, I show that Heidegger is recovering or returning to, rather than inventing, a relational ontology which traces its roots back through the Neoplatonic tradition to Plato and ultimately to the Presocratics.
