Information literacy is an important skill for college students, yet many first-year undergraduate students enter college lacking information literacy skills. A lack of information literacy contributes to lower academic performance for college students, which can impact their persistence. Higher education administrators are consistently looking at ways to improve student retention. The purpose of the quantitative correlational study was to determine if a relationship existed between the level of information literacy for first-year students in an online undergraduate degree program and the academic persistence and GPA of those students. The study used a correlational research design. The hypothesis was that the predictor variable (student information literacy skills) would serve as a predictor for the criterion variables (student persistence and student GPA), thereby establishing if the level of information literacy positively or negatively correlates with student retention. This study evaluated the information literacy scores of first-year students who were taking online classes in an undergraduate degree program at an online university in the Southwest. Data were collected for a total of 95 participants. After the data collection was completed, a correlation analysis was conducted for each set of variables. The analysis showed no correlation between the credits completed and the SAILS test score. The analysis showed a positive correlation between the student GPA and the SAILS test score. A common theme among studies indicates the general benefit of information literacy for college students. This study contributes to the literature supporting the need for information literacy in higher education.
