As they age, adults may begin to experience cognitive changes that impact their everyday function. The performance-based functional cognition approach is a person-centered, person-led approach to evaluating cognition and function that goes beyond cognitive abilities as the emphasis is on performance of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). The Performance Assessment of Self-care Skills Checkbook Balancing and Shopping Task (PCST) and the Weekly Calendar Planning Activity 17 item version (WCPA-17) are two differently structured and commonly used assessments of functional cognition. The purpose of the three studies conducted as part of this dissertation work was to provide empirical support for the validity of the PCST and the WCPA-17. As part of this process these assessments were compared to the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), a widely used cognitive screening tool. In the first study, I found that the MoCA was moderately associated with performance on the PCST and WCPA-17. After accounting for demographic factors in the regression models, the MoCA explained significant variance in the PCST Total Cues score and in the WCPA-17 Accuracy score, but more than half of the variance went unexplained. In the second study, I found that the group categorized as having better online awareness had significantly better Accuracy scores on the WCPA-17, used significantly more Strategies to complete the WCPA-17, and performed significantly better on the PCST, than the group that over-rated their performance. In the third study, I found that the PCST had excellent predictive validity to classify impairment based on the WCPA-17 and computed sensitivity and specificity values for a suggested cutoff score. I found that each additional Cue on the PCST contributed to significantly increased risk of impairment on the WCPA-17. These findings suggest that additional factors beyond cognition as measured by the MoCA are important to capture to better explain IADL performance. Online awareness, one such factor, can be captured by functional cognition assessment and may point clinicians towards an intervention approach that supports IADL performance. Finally, I found that the PCST can predict impaired functional cognition as categorized by the WCPA-17, and that the assessments produce unique information regarding an individual's abilities while performing IADL tasks. Future research should examine elements of functional cognition that are important to explaining variation in IADL and further examine the psychometric properties of the PCST and WCPA-17 in additional clinical populations.
