This dissertation promotes an important conversation about the need to further integrate access to mental health care services for end-of-life (EOL) patients in medical settings. EOL patients generally face acute anxiety and existential fear during the process of dying. They also often face daunting and impersonal medical systems that lack access to psychosocial care. This dissertation addresses this problem through the lens of narrative therapy. The product of this dissertation is a manual entitled A Rationale for Narrative Conversations with End-of-Life Patients in Medical Settings: An Introductory Manual. It is intended as a practical, introductory guide for psychologists and other mental and medical health professionals in having narrative, therapeutic conversations with dying patients in medical settings. The background theory and studies showing efficacy of narrative therapy are discussed in this dissertation to provide the reader context for the four main narrative practices covered in the manual: externalizing, re-membering, re-storying, and witnessing. These practices are explained to show how they can foster conversations that help dying patients cope with fear and anxiety by emphasizing their life's meaning and sense of social connection. The evaluations of four expert reviewers are discussed and examined in order to support the writer's manual as a practical and useful guide for psychologists and other mental health and medical staff who work in medical settings.
