Women in the workforce are more likely to have bachelor's degrees and advanced graduate degrees than men. Despite this, the rate of promotion to chief executive officer (CEO) lags, with men achieving the chief executive appointment with greater frequency. Community health centers (CHCs) have demonstrated progress in closing this gap. Sponsorship has been a suggested strategy to help women achieve a CEO role. The purpose of this qualitative narrative study was to discover what can be learned about the role of sponsorship in the career advancement of women to a CEO role in a CHC. Snowball sampling was utilized to identify study participants. Career stories of four women CEOs of CHSs who had experienced sponsorship during their career journey were collected and analyzed. Thematic analysis of their narrative stories provided support for the utility of sponsors in women's career journeys toward a CEO role in a CHC. Participants identified other helpful strategies including networking, social capital leverage, community and personal support systems, and business skills training. The findings are limited to the New England region of the United States and CHCs; thus, not generalizable. Recommendations include providing mid-level female managers with networking skills training, sponsoring memberships to local, regional, state, or national associations, providing practical resources to help with life balance such as child care, financial support for advanced business skills training, and providing inspirational and instructional books authored by diverse female CEOs. Areas for future research include replicating the study in other parts of the United States with a larger sample size and conducting a similar study of female CEOs in other healthcare settings and with those women CEOs who have not experienced sponsorship.
