Objective: Prolonged sitting and sedentary behavior have been associated with obesity, abnormal glucose metabolism, and increased mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. In this randomized cross-over study, we examined the association of intermittent breaks in sedentary time with markers of CVD risk. Methods: Thirteen male and female adults completed two interventions: 1. Prolonged Sitting with 30 min of daily walking; 2. Sitting interrupted by 30 min of standing every hour. The population of interest was sedentary office workers. Each participant underwent both four-day interventions separated by a seven-day washout period. Fasting glucose, BP, HR, BMI, Quality of Life, and Health and Work Productivity were measured at baseline on day 1 of each intervention and once more at the conclusion of the intervention. Standing time and walking were measured through an activity log and a fitness tracker watch. An adjustable standing desk was installed in the office of each participant for the standing intervention, and participants were asked to refrain from making any changes in their normal dietary habits or activity routine for the duration of each intervention. Results: SPSS was used for statistical analysis. A paired t-test was used to compare within group and between group means for walking and standing. Comparison of pre and post intervention means showed a statistically significant increase in QoL for the walking intervention (α = .05, µ= 87.92 ±9.54, p= .015). Trends indicated a decrease of fasting glucose levels approaching significance for within group comparisons both interventions (standing: p=.053; walking: p=.061). There was a greater trend towards decrease in post intervention glucose for standing compared to walking. Conclusion: The purpose of this study was to assess changes in fasting glucose and quality of life by reducing sedentary time throughout the workday in order to identify effective and feasible methods of decreasing CVD risk. Results of this study suggest that integrating a standing desk into the work environment of office workers may be an effective and feasible way to mitigate CVD risk. Additionally, using a standing desk had no negative impact on work productivity or quality of life.
