This project is a novel. Its protagonist is a teenage girl named Ginger Graham who finds herself thrust into the foster care system with no memory of her previous life. She is under a court order to meet with a psychologist to try to regain her memory because she is a material witness to a serious crime; however, her testimony will only be useful to the justice system if she can regain it naturally because it is believed that her memories may not be authentic if she is subjected to suggestions about the crime. The novel is divided into four parts, wherein Ginger proceeds through four different foster situations, which progress from ideal to abysmal. Finally, Ginger's memories begin to return and she must face down the perpetrator of the crime. This novel was based on research about memory loss due to post-traumatic stress disorder, general research about foster care, reading books about writing fiction, reading a novel about the foster care system, and recalling the first-hand experiences of different foster care situations related to the author by a close personal friend. The major themes explored in the novel include the inconsistency in foster care placements, the nature of dissociative memory loss due to trauma, and attachment issues in adolescence.
