Though his poetic contributions overshadow the other endeavors of William Butler Yeats's storied career, the theatre proved to be among his persistent and evolving interests. Yeats's later theatre, beginning with the Noh-structured play At the Hawk's Well, manifests as a ritual enterprise; a productive node for the poet dramatist's campaign to merge his belief and exercises in language, aesthetics, and occult spirituality. The theatricality that yields from this period is a highly conventionalized representational mode that couples the imaginative potency of the poetic word with an overt artificial approach to material stagecraft through masks and dance. In manifesting fantastical visions for audiences in a thoroughly mystical format, this theatrical approach sought ancient imagination to counteract what Yeats saw as the impoverishing effects of modernity championed by the naturalistic verisimilitude of fourth wall drama that proliferated contemporaneous stage practice. Triangulating the Yeatsian experience of spectating using his poetry, prose, and plays, this thesis posits the major contribution of these works is not only what they exhibit, but the ways they challenge a modern audience's typical receptive capacity into an expansive theatrical visuality. This distinct way of seeing reorients the spectator to magical possibilities, mythic coherence, and spiritual unification.
