Climate change mitigation requires the rapid decarbonization of the grid to preserve human health and prevent further damage to the Earth's ecosystems. Energy storage systems are essential to accommodate and manage variable and intermittent renewable generation into the grid, ensure reliability, and provide grid services that today are provided by fossil power generators. Frequency Regulation (FR) and Flexible Ramping Product (FRP) are examples of important grid services for increasing renewable integration and providing flexibility in an increasingly volatile grid. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Hydrogen Energy Storage Systems (HESS) are evolving to provide such services. While studies to date analyze the technologies themselves and the economics of the technologies participating in service markets, real-time performance comparisons between BESS and HESS technologies are lacking in the literature. This study analyzes the differences between BESS and HESS technologies by analyzing real-time service performance for the same FR and FRP services. To explore performance insights that inform how BESS and HESS are used for FR and FRP services, power error, performance scores, and operational flexibility were assessed for each technology for a variety of grid service scenarios. Both BESS and HESS demonstrate acceptable performance scores while BESS show slightly higher performance under most conditions. While BESS have higher operational flexibility in terms of startup conditions, HESS show advantages in operational flexibility while performing downward flexibility services via Power-to-Gas (P2G) due to the ability to export hydrogen.
