Grafting is an ancient horticultural technique that fuses together the root system of one individual (the rootstock) with the shoot system of a different, often genetically distinct individual (the scion). Grafting has been used for centuries to confer a host of favorable traits from the root system into elite or prized scion varieties. However, the influence of rootstock genotype on the expression of scion phenotype has only recently been comprehensively surveyed. In this dissertation, I explore the influence of commercially available grapevine rootstocks on the phenotypic expression of the scion cultivar Chambourcin with a particular focus on how this influence changes over time and across natural environmental variation. To do this, I employ multi-dimensional phenotyping platforms, often termed phenomics, to understand this influence. In Chapter 1, I survey four multi-dimensional phenotyping modalities including leaf elemental composition, leaf metabolomics, leaf gene expression, and leaf shape. In Chapter 2, I expand the survey of leaf elemental composition to include multiple years and natural environmental variation. In Chapter 3, I expand the survey of gene expression to consider addition tissues over multiple years and natural environmental variation. In this work, I show that the influence of rootstock genotype on scion phenotype is often subtle, but can be ubiquitously identified across phenotyping modalities. The subtlety often reflects the rootstock's ability to modulate scion phenotype in a temporally- and environmentally-dependent manner.
