This thesis argues that colonial Rhode Island, and its capital, Newport, can be seen as part of a greater or "vast" Caribbean economic, cultural, and social space. It was an outward-facing, maritime colony with deep ties to Europe's Caribbean colonies. Rhode Island merchants who traded enslaved Africans, natural resources, and finished goods connected the colony to the Caribbean. The movement of people and ideas because of this commerce influenced the development of urban Rhode Island. The story of Newport is one of dependence and independence, where the residents of a city with few resources but an advantageous location and good harbor naturally looked outward to the sea and to other island cities hundreds of miles away for economic prosperity. The mental maps and imagined geographies of Rhode Island's merchants, enslaved people, sailors, and craftsmen who participated directly and indirectly in commerce with the Caribbean transcended imperial boundaries and traditional geographic regions, like New England or "colonial America." The residents of Newport saw the city in relation to nearby towns, islands, and colonies but also as part of a commercial world that extended down the coast to the Caribbean and across the Atlantic to Britain and West Africa. Finally, this thesis demonstrates that comparative, international approaches are essential for studying colonial America and the United States.
