The ghost story is one of our most malleable traditions, and it is one many still closely associate with the Victorians, as evidenced by the many neo-Victorian ghost stories in existence. This thesis's goal is to reveal how these neo-Victorian novels, far from being an exercise of nostalgia and escapism, perform important cultural, especially feminist work, and how much of it is done through a revisionary approach to the Spiritualist movement. This work is accomplished through five functions of the ghost, wherein: 1. The neo-Victorian novel, as a ghost in and of itself, reveals the vital connection of past issues to present ones; 2. The ghost itself, simply by appearing and existing, is a validation of women's often questioned lived experiences; 3. The spirit, by acting or speaking through the mouth of another, or by being embodied by the medium herself, is a remarkable vehicle for gender identity expression; 4. Acts of fraud surrounding mediumship and paranormal activity serve as a commentary on feminist and patriarchal power struggles involving authority over reality and fiction (that is, when committed by men in neo-Victorian novels, it acts as a way of preserving patriarchal forces, and when committed by women, it represents a method of maneuvering around disadvantages in an imbalanced system); 5. Ghosts in neo-Victorian novels--rather than endorsing the rhetoric that allows ghost-witnesses to be pathologized, and therefore proclaimed socially deviant,--express women's oppressed desires and ambitions.
