Mother-child play and its association with toddler expressive language was described and analyzed in this cross-sectional survey of 56 Saint Lucian mothers. The key variables quantified included mothers' attitudes towards play, daily play times, mothers' play preferences, and children's play partners. The majority of mothers (67.5%) had a positive attitude towards play. On average mother-child play time was about one hour each day and only 25% of mothers were their children's main play partners. Mothers' attitudes towards play did not significantly moderate the relationship between the quantity of mother-child play and child expressive language. Mother employment status and preschool enrollment status, but not mother-child play, positively predicted child expressive vocabulary and grammar, respectively. The findings suggested that preschool enrollment may be more influential to language development than mother-child play in Caribbean contexts. However, further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to replicate these results. These findings should encourage researchers, practitioners, and policymakers in early childhood education and development to explore other cultural activities besides parent-child play for the promotion of early language skills. In addition, earlier enrollment in preschool programs should strongly be considered by stakeholders as a strategy to promote language development in toddlers.
