This dissertation provides a critical analysis of the literature related to the role of the pastor or counselor in helping missionaries who return from the mission field to their home culture in the United States. It reviews literature written in English from all sources available, including journal articles, books, and websites from the past 122 years. It analyzes the literature to discover themes, and ten themes were discovered. This study analyzes the literature based on content, the source of publication of the literature, the perspectives of the authors, and the knowledge base of the authors. As a result of the study, a recommendation for the development of a consortium of professionals involved in the field of missionary care, academicians, mission organizations, counseling, and pastors is made.
