Counselors are highly vulnerable to professional burnout, and a day's work may expose counselors to highly emotionally charged client-detailed descriptions of distressing events. A critical review of the literature aimed to identify the impact of emotional intelligence (EI) in mitigating burnout among practicing mental health and substance abuse counselors in the United States. A total of 154 relevant studies were reviewed, suggesting that emotional intelligence (EI) is associated with less burnout among other human-service professionals such as doctors, nurses, and teachers. However, the role of EI in mitigating burnout, specifically in mental health and addiction counselors, has only been studied empirically by Gutierrez et al. (2019), with a sample size of 130 participants. While Gutierrez et al. (2019) found a significant direct relationship between EI and burnout in addiction counselors, with high EI correlating with less burnout, much further research is needed.
