In 2020, the president of the American Psychological Association (APA) declared racism as a crisis equal to that of pandemic. Racism has plagued people of color since the beginning of time. Specifically, the United States was built on the oppression of African Americans. The historical and structural racism this country was founded upon still affects the lives of African American adults today. Although not recognized by some scholars, racial trauma is real. Racism is a public health crisis that requires immediate attention. In an attempt to promote racial healing and racial reconciliation, Americans must first acknowledge the ills of racism and its lingering effects. It is important to identify the numerous ways racism is experienced and the lasting effects it has on its victims and their communities. This dissertation critically analyzes current peer reviewed journal articles published within the past 5-8 years about racial trauma and its effects specifically on African Adults. As a result of this critical analysis, effective strategies, and tools for addressing and promoting healing from racial trauma are here presented. Although racial trauma cannot be healed overnight, there are some concrete steps that members of the helping profession can take to promote individual and collective healing and race reconciliation.
