Social networking sites (SNS) are pervasive in today's culture and are predictive of adverse outcomes in subjective well-being (SWB), depression symptoms, and suicide-related outcomes among adolescents (Krasnova et al., 2015; Krause et al., 2019; Ozimek & Bierhoff, 2020; Park & Baek, 2018; Twenge, Joiner, et al., 2018; Twenge, Martin, & Campbell, 2018; Verduyn et al., 2017). In this study, the author will use a thematic analysis of the available literature on the impact of adolescent SNS usage on the self. The themes resulting from that analysis will be presented in this review. This review will give special attention to SNS addiction, adolescent brain development, and social attachment theory, which is considered relevant to adolescent vulnerability and motivations for SNS use in this study. Limitations of the current literature are also presented, as the literature on SNS and self-discrepancy primarily explores the in-application behaviors of users. In contrast, the literature on social comparison examines both the users' in-application behavior and the impact of SNS on their behavior and well-being. The conflicting literature related to the connection between adolescent SNS usage and depression is also discussed in this report.
