Addiction is a complex brain disease characterized by chronic and high relapse rates that often make it a challenge for individuals to overcome. Addiction involves changes in brain chemistry, as well as behavioral and environmental factors that often contribute to continued drug use and addictive behaviors. Relapse prevention is an essential focus of treatment and recovery from substance use disorders (SUD). Recovery from SUDs is a lifelong process that impacts every aspect of a person's life. This dissertation discusses the process of recovery from substance use disorders and the development of a relapse prevention workbook curriculum that promotes a holistic approach to improve recovery outcomes. The holistic approach of the curriculum considers the mental, physical, and spiritual well-being of the individual. This workbook curriculum was designed to focus on research-based concepts and relapse prevention techniques. The theoretical models of the curriculum include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), relapse prevention (RP), motivational interviewing (MI), and mindfulness. Self-care was given particular focus in the curriculum with the inclusion of topics such as nutrition, exercise, and coping with stress. Christian spiritual integration was also included in the curriculum. The area of spirituality included topics such as the importance of spirituality, developing spiritual practices, the 12-step recovery model of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and establishing a vision for life. The workbook is a 12-week group curriculum that offers three modules that address mindset, self-care, and spirituality. Each module presents four lessons that provide psychoeducational information and practical applications for the given topic.
