This phenomenological qualitative study explored the lived experiences of twelve Special Operations Forces (SOF) Veterans during psychedelic-assisted treatment with ibogaine and 5-methoxy-N, N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT). The targeted population for this study was SOF Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who served two or more combat deployments post-September 11, 2011. Participants were recruited through nonprobability convenience sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews in which participants' stories were used to describe the physical effects, hallucinations, and emotions experienced while under the influence of these medicines. Common themes were found in their visual experiences. Subjects gained new insights from their visionary experiences such as the origin of their negative behaviors, and some developed compassion for or understanding of others that they did not have before medicine. The ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT treatments were cathartic in the healing of old wounds. Study participants found peace regarding haunting memories. After treatment, all participants reported reductions in depression, anxiety, stress, fear, anger, and/or nightmares. Subjects with tendencies toward suicidal thoughts, risky behaviors, excessive alcohol consumption, or hypervigilance, reported the absence of or reduction in those behaviors. There were improvements in prosocial behaviors and all study participants experienced some degree of relief from physical pain. This paper describes the essence of the experience of SOF Veterans during treatment with ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT for PTSD.
