The purposes of this dissertation were to (a) develop a new conceptualization of adolescent autonomy in terms of the concept of self-governance, (b) develop methods to measure self-governance, (c) test the psychometric properties of the measurement instruments and (d) examine the associations between self-governance and parent-adolescent relationships, parenting behaviors and parenting styles. Questionnaires were administered to 153 mothers, fathers and adolescents during home visits. Correlational analyses were used to test the strength and direction of the relationships. The measures of self-governance were reliable and results supported their validity. Self-governance was associated with positive outcomes and was inversely related with negative outcomes. Relationships between self-governance and closeness with parents were small, whereas there were somewhat stronger negative relationships between self-governance and parent-adolescent discord. Parental monitoring was weakly associated with self-governance, whereas parental coercion was strongly and negatively related with self-governance. In terms of parenting styles, self-governance was positively related to authoritative parenting and negatively related to uninvolved parenting. There was no relationship between authoritarian parenting and self-governance. There was reasonable convergence between parent and adolescent reported data. There were some significant and interesting sex differences among the outcomes. Results provided evidence that the concept of self-governance overcomes several limitations of past conceptualizations of autonomy. Results also indicated that future studies using this conceptualization are needed to increase our understanding of the development of autonomy during adolescence, and its links with parent-adolescent relationships, parenting behaviors and parenting styles.
