This dissertation investigates the modernist revival and adaptation of the literary salon, using Viacheslav Ivanov's Tower and the Stray Dog cabaret as focal points. Salon culture, which was at its most brilliant during the early Romantic period, began to lose its relevance by the mid-1800s and by the turn-of-the-century had become virtually defunct. This study describes how the symbolists reclaimed the institution, why they did so, and the major features of the salon as it subsequently developed in the post-symbolist era of modernism. Specifically, it traces the shift of literary/social life from domestic settings to more public and commercial ones, and discusses some of the ramifications of this change of venue for the literary culture of the period. It identifies ways in which these gatherings shaped the careers and oeuvre of some of their participants, including Mikhail Kuzmin, Anna Akhmatova, Osip Mandelshtam, Vladimir Mayakovsky, and Velimir Khlebnikov.
