Riding upon the Hallyu wave, K-pop, or Korean popular music, has gained a large following in North America in the past decade. Online communities centered around the consumption of K-pop have emerged in various social media spaces including Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr. Despite of these communities being composed of non-native Korean speakers, Korean language is consistently seen and used between fans. This research examines how Korean language is being performed in relation to the framing of identity, that relates to ideologies of authenticity. This research will also address the question of how social boundaries of fandom communities are drawn, suggesting that attention to the intersections between boundaries of linguistic register repertoires, shared language ideologies, and online fan interaction networks may offer a promising theoretical framework for conceptualizing and identifying the boundaries of fandom speech communities and their dynamics.
