Kamila Shamsie's novel, Home Fire (2017), explores British Muslim identity in a post-9/11 global setting, evoking questions of belonging and citizenship for the novel's five second-generation British Muslim characters living in London. Shamsie retells the story of Antigone in a modern, global setting, indicating a parallel between Home Secretary Karamat Lone and the tyrant Creon. I examine how the novel delves into what it means to be British Muslim as it subverts Muslim stereotypes in its delineation of the Pasha sisters' identities, which unfold through interactions with the other three main characters of the novel, Eamonn, Parvaiz, and Karamat. Central to my thesis is Shamsie's rejection of a singular representation of British Muslim identity. This thesis offers an analysis of Isma and Aneeka through the lens of intersectional feminism and the concomitant intersecting elements of race, class, sexuality, and religion.
