Social interactions are part of daily life. Empathy helps people to understand others better and have more effective interactions. Previous research shows that people's memory affects the empathy response they offer, leading to the question of whether memory development could support increased empathy. Some studies found that meditation training enhanced working memory performance. The current study examined whether the potential impact of meditation on working memory could extend to empathy. A sample of 209 Amazon Mechanical Turk workers were randomly assigned listen to 8 minutes of guided meditation audio or an audiobook (control condition). They took a facial memory test before and after the listening task, and at the end of the study, they self-reported trait and state empathy using the IRI and SES scales. The results suggested that the meditation practice did not improve facial working memory. Since this study did not find a significant enhancement in working memory in the overall sample of participants, we could not examine if the enhancement of working memory could affect empathy responses. Correlational analysis between post-test memory performance and empathy showed a significant correlation between the post-test memory score and overall trait empathy, fantasy, and empathic concern. Additionally, a small sample of participants who regularly practiced meditation showed marginally higher perspective-taking and personal distress. Future studies with different meditation or longer-duration practices on participants regularly doing meditation are recommended.
