At risk children, in marginalized populations are more likely to fall further and further behind without an intervention early in kindergarten. Developing an evidence based intervention is key to filling the gap in service. Occupational therapy services are unique to this intervention to support at risk students. An OT intervention, On the SpO.T., was created to address this gap in service and provide feedback to kindergarten teachers to promote handwriting development. The intervention addressed fine motor, visual motor, pre-writing lines, postural control, and bilateral hand control. The results indicated an improvement in the foundational skills necessary for kindergarten readiness and handwriting development. The findings support early intervening OT intervention for at risk students in kindergarten using a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS).
