Transitioning from the United States military to the civilian workforce presents many challenges for non-commissioned officers. The transition process for non-commissioned officers can begin as early as 12 months prior to their release from active-duty military service. The Department of Defense created a 3-to-5-day workshop, known as the Transition Assistance Program (TAP), to provide veterans with tools and resources to use during the transitioning process. However, non-commissioned officers struggle to seek and maintain employment in the civilian workforce. This study examined military non-commissioned officers' transitions to the civilian workforce and the obstacles they encounter. Additionally, this study evaluated the effectiveness of the Department of Defense-sponsored Transition Assistance Program (TAP) regarding non-commissioned officers' ability to seek and retain employment. Furthermore, the study sought to evaluate how TAP can bridge the gap for non-commissioned officers to transition into careers as project management professionals. The research design focused on the lives and perceptions of non-commissioned officers and their transition as project management professionals in the civilian workforce. There were two sample populations, which included non-commissioned officer military veterans and the Department of Defense-sponsored Transition Assistance Program (TAP) employees. The non-commissioned officers sample highlighted their transition back into the civilian workforce. Meanwhile, the Department of Defense-sponsored Transition Assistance Program (TAP) sample focused on the effectiveness of TAP concerning the support for non-commissioned officers' ability to seek and retain employment as project management professionals. The study revealed TAP was ineffective in aiding non-commissioned officers with a successful transition. One recommendation was that the TAP program should explore ways to incorporate project management into the current curriculum. Schlossberg's (2011) adult transition theory 4S model (situation, support, self, and strategies) was used as a conceptual framework. A second recommendation was to extend the TAP workshop from 3 days to 3 weeks, to incorporate more effective programming and effective tools that non-commissioned officers can use during the transition process. Furthermore, a future study would greatly benefit from incorporating the recommendations of the 19 volunteer participants and eight TAP employees. Overall, non-commissioned officers often struggle to adjust, as their military skill sets are often not backed with traditional secondary education.
