This dissertation examines dystopia in postcolonial literature. In other words, it examines postcolonial dystopia in selected Anglophone postcolonial African and Caribbean literature. That is through four themes: hybridity, elitism/privilegism, British colonial education, and gender. Such themes are selected to study specific destructive and dystopian issues and conflicts among the natives of former British colonies and to link them to the British colonial rule. This dissertation has five chapters. Chapter I is Introduction. Chapter II focuses on hybridity and studies Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart (1958) and Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea (1966). Chapter III focuses on elitism and analyzes Ngugi wa Thiong'o's Weep Not, Child (1964) and Alan Paton's Cry, the Beloved Country (1948). Chapter IV examines Jamaica Kincaid's Annie John (1985) and Tsitsi Dangarembga's Nervous Conditions (1988) to address dystopia and British colonial education. Chapter V focuses on gender and studies Chimamanda Adichie's Purple Hibiscus (2003) and NoViolet Bulawayo's We Need New Names (2013). For analyzing the texts, postcolonial, Marxist, and feminist theories are engaged.Through examining destructive and dystopian issues - which are related to the theme of each chapter - that are among the natives, I show how these four themes are powers behind dystopian characteristics, themes, or forms. I also show how such issues are connected with the British colonial power despite they are among natives. This dissertation is conducted because: (1) Studies on postcolonial dystopia are limited. (2) Hybridity, elitism, British colonial education, and gender are studied individually. However, my dissertation brings them together to explore postcolonial dystopia. (3) Although my dissertation links the dystopianism of the explored societies to the British rule, it shows natives' significant role in such dystopianism.
