How partners communicate is predictive of relationship processes and outcomes. Self-reports have provided insight into how couples perceive their communication patterns. However, examining partner communication may require an outsider's observation. The Specific Affect Coding System (SPAFF) has been a gold standard in dyadic observational research, yet its limitations suggest an alternative approach may be worth exploring. iMotions, an automated facial expression analysis software, relies on research that overlaps with SPAFF's foundation. Thus, the current study examined the convergent and criterion-related validity of the two coding systems using archival data sets of couples engaging in interaction tasks. Bivariate correlations and regression analyses revealed modest support for convergent validity, though both systems demonstrated unique associations across criteria. Overall, findings suggest both systems have utility for analyzing affective communication, though the strengths and limitations of each are presented. More studies are needed comparing iMotions across different contexts and with more diverse populations.
