The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative study is to determine to what extent a difference exists in retention for male and female college students who participate in collegiate club sports and those who do not in a private Christian university in the Southwestern United States. The study took place in a private Christian university in the Southwestern United States. The sample in the study included archival data from 13,934 traditional undergraduate ground students enrolled in the 2016-17 academic year. Six hundred and twenty-two students (4.5% of all students) participated in club sports. The majority of students were female (8,872 students, 63.7% of all students). Of these female students, 249 students (2.8%) participated in club sports. Of the 8,872 female students and 7,991 students (90.1%) were retained from fall 2016 through spring 2017. Of the 5,062 male students, 373 students (7.4%) participated in club sports, and 4,536 students (89.6) were retained from fall 2016 through spring 2017. The measure of retention spanned one academic year, from fall to spring (2016-17). A difference in retention was not found for males who participated in club sports versus males who did not χ2 (1) = 0.24, p = .627; φ = .006. Statistically significant findings were noted for females, and females who participated in club sports had higher percentages of retention than females who did not participate in club sports. Females who participated in club sports had significantly greater retention percentages (95.6%) than males who participated in club sports (90.3%), a difference of 5.3%, χ2 (1) = 8.70, p = .003; φ = .03. Statistical significance was found for the association between gender and retention for students who participated in club sports χ2 (1) = 5.86, p = .016; φ = .10. No other associations were statistically significant. Keywords: Retention; club sports; recreational sports.
