Over 30 million youth play sports in the United States. Various factors contribute to the beliefs that influence youths' decisions to participate in sports and their perceived potential to play at the professional or collegial level. The literature clearly shows incongruence between youths' beliefs about becoming a professional athlete and the reality of this happening. It is lesser-known what factors play a role in the development of such unrealistic expectations. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences between inner city youth athletes' beliefs about becoming a professional athlete, as well as beliefs about earning an athletic scholarship, whether participants sport specialized, and demographic variables. The theory of transition was used to understand when these unrealistic beliefs originated and how they shaped youths' beliefs about sport participation. This study had 35 participants between 13-17 years old located in Philadelphia, PA. After consent and assent, participants were administered a 19-question modified version of the Sport Specialization Survey from the Wyss Center. Frequencies were calculated for categorical variables and chi-square tests examined relationships between variables. Findings suggest inner-city youth athletes who believe they will become a professional athlete also believe they will earn an athletic scholarship, but decision to sport specialize and demographic variables were not significant factors associated with beliefs about becoming a professional athlete. A better understanding of these factors could contribute to future recommendations related to best practices for coaches and sporting organizations, as well as parents to foster appropriate expectations and athletic development in inner-city youth athletes.
