Over the years, a number of strategies have been developed to mitigate faking. One strategy that has shown promise in its ability to deter faking is the use of warnings (Dwight & Donovan, 2003). However, the warnings literature has failed to adequately test the effect of warnings on criterion-related validity or explain their limited effectiveness. Therefore, the current study investigated the effect of warnings on the criterion-validity of a personality test in a simulation of a predictive-validity study. In addition, an attempt was made to explain the limited effectiveness of warnings by examining their differential effect on the response behavior of different types of fakers (i.e., rare, consistent, complex). Two hundred and ten participants completed a personality test three times, once in each of three experimental conditions that varied in their instructional sets: Non-specific, No Warning, and Warning. In the Non-specific condition, participants were encouraged to respond honestly to a personality test. The No Warning condition simulated an applicant context in which participants believed they were completing a personality test as part of a selection battery used by an organization. The Warning condition also simulated an applicant context and included the provision of an identification and consequences warning. The criterion-validities across experimental conditions resembled a U-shaped pattern, such that the predictor-criterion relationship was strongest in the Non-specific condition, attenuated in the No Warning condition, and almost fully recovered in the Warning condition. Furthermore, two groups of participants were identified that corresponded to complex and consistent fakers. However, these two groups of fakers did not differ in their patterns of validity coefficients across experimental conditions. The implications of this study for the faking literature are discussed.
