Human trafficking is a pervasive issue that continues to impact the U.S. as well as countries around the world. Research indicates that one of the most effective ways to combat human trafficking is collaborative governance. International research has expanded on this by evaluating barriers to collaborative efforts. The problem is that research regarding barriers to anti-human trafficking collaboration in the U.S. is limited. This gap in knowledge has a negative impact on domestic efforts to combat human trafficking because international research fails to account for socio-cultural-political factors that impact organizational efforts to work collaboratively in the U.S. The purpose of this study is to explore barriers to anti-human trafficking collaborative governance in the U.S.A qualitative case study was facilitated to research and analyze outcomes related to the subject matter. Thematic analysis was used to identify and analyze trends in the data. The results indicated that barriers to successful anti-human trafficking collaborative governance included stakeholders having a lack of clarity regarding the roles and responsibilities of collaboration members, a lack of clarity regarding the goals of the collaborative governance, an inability to effectively monitor collaborative efforts and the outcomes of collaborative activities, and a lack of resources to sustain collaborative efforts. The implications of the research outcomes are that it is critical for collaborative efforts to establish a shared vision, clarify roles and responsibilities for stakeholders, and work collaboratively to secure proper resources to sustain their efforts.
