Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerave movement disorder that can be idenfied by motor and nonmotor related symptoms and is oen developed later in life (Kalia & Lang, 2015; Goberman, Coelho, & Robb, 2001). Hypokinec dysarthria (HD) is the term used to describe the speech of many individuals with PD. HD can affect different speech subsystems including phonaon, resonaon, and arculaon and can oen be idenfied by impaired phonaon, weak voice, roughness, hoarseness, tremulousness, breathiness, fesnang speech rate (Goberman, Coelho, & Robb, 2001; Skodda, 2011). One or more of these speech deficits affect the speech intelligibility of individuals with PD significantly. Previous literature has well documented the perceptual implicaons of these speech deficits on the individual's speech intelligibility. For example, the accelerated speech rate has a considerable bearing on the speech intelligibility of an individual with PD. Forrest et al. (1998) compared speech intelligibility of individuals with PD to the 10 parcipants in the healthy control group and 10 younger and healthy parcipants. They found all 10 geriatric adults with PD had much lower intelligibility accuracy than geriatric adults and younger adults without PD.In terms of arculaon, studies have found that people with PD have a range of arculaon errors that leads to decreased speech intelligibility. In a study of dysarthric speakers, Beukelman, Fager, Ullman, Hanson, and Logemann (2002) reported an 8% increase in intelligibility when speakers used clear speech at the sentence level as compared to their habitual sentences. This indicated that arculaon errors affected the speech intelligibility in individuals with PD. Similarly, voice disorders have impacted speech intelligibility in this populaon as well. Cannito et al. (2012) compared sentence intelligibility before and aer voice treatment in a group of 8 speakers with PD using a single-blinded, randomized pre-post treatment design. The results indicated that the group's sentence intelligibility improved significantly post-treatment which indicated the effect of voice disorders on speech intelligibility in individuals with vocal impairment. Finally, the impact of prosody on speech intelligibility was thoroughly evaluated by Pell et al. (2006). The authors invesgated the impact of PD on vocal- prosodic communicaon from the perspecve of listeners in a group of 21 parcipants with PD and 12 healthy controls. In general, results indicated that PD speakers produced uerances that were less understood compared to their healthy control counterparts. The above studies have furthered our understanding on the effect of the aforemenoned six speech dimensions on speech intelligibility in individuals with PD. However, a major shortcoming of these studies is that they did not consider the magnitude of each of these six speech dimensions on speech intelligibility. While it is beyond doubt that speech intelligibility is a byproduct of effecve interacon of all the six speech dimensions, it is also important to note that not all these six dimensions impact speech intelligibility equally in individuals withPD. Considering thisabove limitaon, the current study aimed to idenfy the weighted impact of each of the six speech dimensions (respiraon, phonaon, resonance, arculaon, prosody, and speech rate) on speech intelligibility in individuals with PD. The research queson that we intended to answer was: what are the weighted and relave contribuons of each of the six speech dimensions, including respiraon, phonaon, resonance, arculaon, prosody, and speech rate on speech intelligibility of individuals with PD?
