This study explored the relationship and predictive capabilities of transformational leadership behaviors and Black employees' turnover intentions of individuals working at large U.S. corporations. While transformational leadership has been linked with positive organizational outcomes, it has not been researched specifically related to Black employee turnover intentions. This study used a nonexperimental survey research design to measure employee perception of their supervisors' transformational leadership behaviors on Black employee turnover intentions. Ninety four individuals that self-identify as Black, who were over the age of 18, and worked for an organization that employed over 250 people based in the United States participated in this study. Participants completed the Multifactor Leadership Rater Questionnaire (MLQ-5X) and the Turnover Intention Scale. There was no statistically significant relationship or predictive capabilities of transformational leadership behaviors, alone or in any combination, and Black employee turnover. Results showed a non-significant regression, F (5, 88) = .909, p = .479 with R = .22 with an effect size of R2 = .05, or only 5% of the variance in turnover intention is related to transformational leadership behaviors. As Black employees represent the highest rate of turnover among racial groups, it would benefit organizations to develop retention strategies to address this issue. These findings indicate the need for further research surrounding leadership and the impact on Black employee turnover intentions.
