Bus electrification is considered as an approach to reduce gas emissions generated from the transportation sector. However, the current electric bus technology, namely the Battery Electric Bus (BEB), relies on batteries as the main source of electrical energy. This makes BEBs face one major challenge, namely limited range. BEBs need to be charged to be able to continue to operate. On the other hand, charging BEBs requires a longer time than refueling diesel fuel. Consequently, the application of BEB potentially has an impact on vehicle scheduling and fleet size. This thesis aims to investigate the most ideal charging strategy to address this challenge by minimizing the impact: regular, fast charging, and battery swapping. A simple case study was conducted. The schedule data used was the actual schedules. The fleet size was determined using the deficit function method, then the required charging time was added to certain trips resulting in adjustments to the schedule and fleet size after electrification. The results show that regular charging causes the most disruption to scheduling and fleet size, while battery swapping has smaller impacts. On the other hand, fast charging is proven to provide the least disruption compared to others. Further research is needed to investigate the impact of bus electrification in more detail, including a thorough sensitivity analysis of the various parameters.
