A music ministry is a Community of Practice (CoP) where musical artists share a passion for joint music making. This qualitative collective case study examines how collaborative information behavior occurs within storefront church gospel communities of musical practice (CoMP) in areas of learning, cohesion, and creativity from the perspective of ear-trained musicians and leaders on the south side of Chicago. Through the theoretical framework of CoMP, this study advances the utility of Wenger's Community of Practice concept by applying its' lens to musical communities to provide an in-depth understanding of how gospel music communities collaborate to learn and perform music. This study sought to answer the question: In what ways does Collaborative Information Behavior occur within storefront church gospel CoMP in the areas of cohesion, ear-training, and creativity? Through thematic analysis, three themes emerged: 1) Cohesion is achieved through leadership, shared repertoire, and mutual goals, 2) Ear-training occurs through practice, and 3) Creativity is achieved through collaborative improvisation.
