Canterbury Cathedral in Kent, England, is one of the great achievements of English Gothic architecture. The murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket there in 1170 had a significant influence on the fortunes of the Cathedral and its architectural design. The choir and sanctuary were rebuilt in 1175-80 and two additional structures were added east of the sanctuary, Trinity Chapel and Corona Chapel, specifically to honor Becket after his martyrdom and canonization. Canterbury Cathedral encloses a large space within its walls that is subdivided into many smaller areas that were all regarded as sacred spaces to varying degrees by medieval Christians. A sacred space is a location that is deemed to be sacred or hallowed and which is believed to facilitate encounters with the divine. Of these spaces at Canterbury, there are five primary areas on the west to east axis of the cathedral: nave, choir, sanctuary, Trinity Chapel, and Corona Chapel. The creation of sacred space at Canterbury relied on the three key elements of architecture, art, and ritual. These three elements combined to form an "ecosystem of sacred space" at Canterbury that engenders a holistic experience in the perception of the viewer, in which the overall effect is greater than the sum of its parts. That is, the interactions between the three elements create an experience that cannot be achieved by any single elements on its own. My analysis demonstrates how this sacred space ecosystem was employed at Canterbury to create a strong and lasting impression of sacred space in the minds of medieval viewers, particularly in regard to the areas devoted to St. Thomas Becket.
