The purpose of the study was to develop the constructs of egotism and transfluence through item generation, factor analysis, as well as convergent, discriminant, and concurrent validity. The item responses of 155 adult participants were analyzed. A set of principal components analyses were conducted and two components were extracted with orthogonal rotation to the VARIMAX criterion. Egotism and transfluence emerged as orthogonal factors. Support was found for the convergent, discriminant, and concurrent validity of the two constructs. As hypothesized, individuals scoring high on egotism also scored high on ego grasping and low on self-transcendence. This supported the convergent and discriminant validity of egotism. Individuals high on transfluence scored high on a measure of self-transcendence which supported the convergent validity of transfluence. No significant relationship was found between transfluence and ego grasping, the discriminant measure. Additionally, egotism and transfluence evidenced concurrent validity with a measure of Gestalt resistance processes. Ways in which Gestalt therapy theory could accommodate these findings were discussed. A model of transcendence which accounts for the findings was presented. Limitations and suggestions for future research were discussed.
