The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to understand how male gamers describe the role of transient peer relations and streaming platforms in the sexual harassment of female gamers when playing video games online, in the United States. Although literature regarding sexual harassment in online video games exists, male descriptions about unique microsystems of transient peer relations and streaming platforms were unexplored. This study contained the use of neo-ecological model to guide the research. Two research questions were utilized to explore male descriptions of the role of transient peer relations and streaming platforms in the sexual harassment of female gamers. Purposive sampling was used to gather the descriptions from male gamers over the age of 18 with experience in online video games and streaming platforms, within the United States. Answers to the research questions were sought through an anonymous questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis was utilized to analyze the data. An inductive approach was used to produce codes and patterns to identify themes to answer the research questions. The results indicated within transient settings, males attempt to assert dominance and control over females by using culturally appropriated behaviors and gaming norms in conjunction with anonymous interactions and lack of consequences which leads to the sexual harassment of female gamers. Additionally, within streaming platforms, the passive oversight of streaming platforms, provocation, and parasocial relationships contribute to the sexual harassment of female gamers when playing video games online.
