Over the past century, Western interest and scholarship on the music of the Balinese gamelan has grown considerably. The widespread exposure of Indonesian traditional music cannot be simply explained by migration or cultural interventions, instead, it is a result of various intersecting colonial histories and global integration. Due to this integration, composers have been influenced in some ways by Balinese gamelan music for years. As early as the nineteenth century, well-known composer Claude Debussy was inspired after he witnessed gamelan music and dancing during the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1889, which inspired him to compose the piano piece, Pagodes. More than one hundred years later, composers are still incorporating Balinese musical elements in their compositions. This study considers the combinations of traditional Balinese gamelan music and Western music compositional methods in three works for flute and piccolo, spanning the twentieth and twenty-first century, which include Anne Boyd's Bali Moods No.1, Gareth Farr's Kembang Suling, and David Loeb's Balinese Fantasies. In summary, the purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the applications of the hybridity of Balinese gamelan musical culture with Western compositional skills and notations within these three flute and piccolo pieces. I discuss these three works in their musical forms, harmonies, melodies, and performing techniques as well as the differences and similarities between the flute or piccolo musical writing styles with the musical writing styles of the Indonesian traditional bamboo flute, "Surling." I hope that through this study, more contemporary composers will know the traditional music of Indonesia or even Asia and fuse these traditional musical elements in their compositions to ultimately expand the repertoire for the flute.
