With the introduction of various forms of multimedia on concert stages, it is prudent for music conductors to develop a framework of procedures, techniques, and philosophies when incorporating outside audio-visual components into their programs. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a guide for music ensemble directors on conducting with multimedia in live performances. Firstly, by presenting the historical context, educational benefits, and aesthetic considerations of music performances involving multimedia. Secondly, by defining the procedures, techniques, and technologies that conductors can utilize to achieve artistic success when working with multimedia elements. In preparation for this dissertation, the author presented a lecture recital as a case study on three categories of multimedia that conductors may encounter in live performances: independent, synchronous, and interactive. An analysis of each category is discussed, including relevant musical examples from the recital and summaries with applications for music directors to consider. This document is designed to serve as a practical and artistic resource for conductors who wish to incorporate multimedia elements into their musical performances.
