Highly sensitive persons (HSPs) are those who have the genetic trait of sensory processing sensitivity (SPS). Characteristics of SPS include sensitivity to environmental stimuli, increased depth of information processing, greater emotional reactivity, and greater physiological stress reactivity. This exploratory study on the lived experiences of HSPs used an integral inquiry approach and a narrative hermeneutics method along with an expressive arts-based research component to examine the ways in which HSPs have developed self-awareness, self-care practices, and relational boundaries. HSPs' stories were investigated from the perspective of the meaning making process that can lead to growth and development by increasing self-awareness and the knowledge that being highly sensitive is a normal human trait rather than some type of dysfunction. The gap that this study addressed was in the recognition of gender diversity, especially regarding the emotional aspects of SPS, and the inclusion of the experiences of those who have been left out of both the psychological research and the popular literature. This study further aimed to disrupt the power dynamics of research through collaboration with the participants and the use of creative expressions as data and in presenting the results. The findings of this study contribute to the theories of SPS by expanding the definition SPS to include a description of empathic experiences that vary in intensity, demonstrating that socially constructed gender norms are problematic for people of all genders, and proposing a model of HSPs' transformative experiences as they gained awareness and understanding about their sensitivities.
