There is a need for further research on sexual harassment to include the sexual harassment experiences of men as we have seen an increasing percentage of sexual harassment complaints filed by men with the EEOC since the 1990s. The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the sexual harassment experiences of men in the workplace. The qualitative method of narrative inquiry was used to explore narratives of sexual harassment as experienced by men to obtain more descriptive in-depth information about the sexual harassment experiences of men to understand the larger context of sexual harassment. One in-person interview, three anonymous survey responses, EEOC press releases, YouTube videos and social media postings all related to the sexual harassment of men were used as sources of narrative data. The narrative data was analyzed using Tesch's Eight Steps in the Coding Process. The data was categorized into types and categories of sexual harassment (SSSH, OSSH, sexual coercion, unwanted sexual attention, and gender harassment) and analyzed for other information such as the gender of the harasser and the relationship the harasser had with the victim (supervisor, coworker, customer). The findings of this study indicate men are experiencing a lot of same-sex sexual harassment (SSSH), and may be more inclined to formally report SSSH then opposite-sex sexual harassment (OSSH). Some reasons for this may be that men experience a double standard and reprimand when reporting OSSH. The findings of this research also revealed three legitimizing myths that contribute to the double standard and reprimand men experience when reporting sexual harassment. The findings contribute to Social Dominance Theory by expanding its possible use to explaining sexual harassment in the workplace. Sexualized behaviors may be utilized by both men and women as signals of one's dominance in the social hierarchy that has formed in a workplace. An implication is that subordinate men in the workplace may be the targets of the most aggressive forms of sexual harassment by other men. Further exploration of sexual harassment using Social Dominance Theory as a theoretical framework is likely to lead to further insights of the nature of sexual harassment in the workplace.
