This qualitative case study explored the relationship between experiential learning and student engagement for online community college students. Nationwide, community colleges are seeking to improve student success and retention, particularly in online courses. Experiential learning may be one way to increase student engagement in courses while at the same time helping students to realize the relevance of the content and their own role in knowledge creation. This qualitative case study consisted of one instructor (who is also the researcher) and spanned three sections of an online medical ethics course at a community college in the northeastern United States. The theoretical framework of ee-learning and the work of John Dewey provided the foundation for an experiential redesign of one existing course module. The data suggest that deliberate experiential design may help community college students (a) engage more deeply in online courses, (b) pursue more complex peer interactions, (c) appreciate both a challenging experience and their own development, and (d) recognize course content in real-world settings. The case study suggests that community colleges may want to consider exploring the potential of short-term experiential learning opportunities within online courses as one way to increase student engagement.
