Many speculations have been made regarding the psychologist's family of origin. However, few studies have empirically investigated these stereotypes. This study utilized the Personal Authority in the Family System Questionnaire (PAFS-Q) and the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales (FACES II), two self-report questionnaires designed to assess family of origin structure and patterns of interaction, to compare differences between families of counseling psychology and mathematics majors. The primary hypothesis that counseling psychology majors come from more structurally dysfunctional families of origin than a comparison sample was supported by the use of independent chi-square analyses. Combining 2 x 2 x 2 factorial MANOVA results and normative data for the PAFS-Q, however, math majors were observed to utilize dysfunctional patterns of interaction in their respective families of origin while psychology majors did not. Analyses comparing graduate and undergraduate psychology majors and gender differences were also conducted. Implications and areas in need of further research are discussed.
