The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine the relationship between participation in career-based learning opportunities and students' level of engagement in school. In this study, a survey measured the level of engagement reported by students. Students indicated if they were involved in a career-based learning opportunity and their grade level.Dewey's Experience in Education (1938) provides that learning occurs through experiences, and it is through these experiences that students can better construct meaning. Ryan and Deci's (2000) Self Determination Theory, the need for competence, autonomy, and relatedness to fuel intrinsic motivation, greatly influences understanding of how career-based learning increases students' engagement. The related literature provided economic changes, calling for further aligning business, industry, and educational experiences provided by schools. Federal legislation further supports the value and consistency between the alignment of skill development in curriculum and instruction with the economy. Given the research purpose of career-based learning opportunities and student engagement, the research approach was a quantitative survey design collecting cross-sectional data from high school students attending a suburban school district in southeast Wisconsin in Grades 9 through 12. The first research question was: What is the relationship between students' level of engagement in school and participation in career-based learning opportunities? The second research question was: Is there a relationship between students' level of engagement in school and participation in career-based learning opportunities by grade level? The sample included n= 1,131 participants who completed a survey in April 2019. The findings showed no significant relationship between student engagement levels and participation in career-based learning experiences. Additionally, the student's responses for engagement were independent of the grade level of students engaged in career-based learning opportunities. The findings do not change the programming options for students involved in career-based learning experiences. However, the findings provide additional opportunities for qualitative research to examine the value of career-based learning experiences with multiple measures.
