Parkinson's disease is a debilitating neurodegenerative illness that inflicts enough physical and cognitive impairment to require assistance in completion activities of daily life. The responsibilities associated with caring for someone with Parkinson's disease are such that burden, stress and anxiety can cause substantial conflict in a family caregiver's own life. The purpose of this study is to examine burden and the use of art as therapy, more specifically the use of Zentangle, as treatment for stress and anxiety in those caring for people with Parkinson's disease. This quasi-experimental study used a pre-post test design without a control group. Twenty-four adult family members participated in this research study facilitated by a Creative Arts Therapy Master's Candidate. Participation required a one-time completion of a short-form Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI-12), a 20-minute Zentangle intervention, as well as completion of pre-and post-test Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and the Caregiver Self-Assessment Questionnaire (CSAQ) to address change. Overall, results indicated a significant decrease in both stress and anxiety.
