During the late nineteenth century, the cultural and political avant-gardes merged for a brief time. Young writers and artists were attracted by the anarchist movement. Their fascination eventually led many of them to socialism via the Dreyfus Affair, the event that marked the collective engagement of intellectuals in the life of the city. This study examines the milieu of the Revue Blanche, one of the leading avant-garde "little magazines" of the fin de siecle. What role did the review play in the literary milieu? What was its relation to the cultural establishment as well as to the political milieu? How did its collaborators view contemporary political and social problems, and what was the nature of their political involvement? The aims of this dissertation are twofold. The first section is a sociological study of the Revue Blanche milieu. It examines the way in which review collaborators came together and how they functioned as a group. It also situates the review within the context of the cultural and political milieus of the late nineteenth century, largely through the examination of such socializing structures as the Parisian lycee, the Ecole Normale, "little magazines," and literary salons. The second half of the thesis traces the political evolution of the review, using Revue Blanche texts as a primary resource. This textual analysis is of course complemented by the use of archival materials and secondary sources. The examination of the Revue Blanche's political history illuminates issues that concerned intellectuals at the fin de siecle, in particular, the debate concerning the artist and his role in society, as well as the purpose of his art. The Revue Blanche, which began as a literary endeavor, devoted greater attention over the years to contemporary political and social problems. During the Dreyfus Affair, it became a major centre dreyfusard, a meetingplace for revisionist intellectuals and politicians. La Revue Blanche stood at the crossroads of important political, social, and cultural currents, mediating not only between the avant-garde and the establishment but also between the literary and political milieus. The history of the Revue Blanche chronicles the experience of a generation of French intellectuals and sheds light on the relationship of intellectuals and politics in France.
