When primates appear to tolerate tourists at long-running tourism sites, we often assume that the habituated primates no longer experience negative consequences of prolonged exposure to human visitors. Often tourism sites are also buffered by agricultural plots that are defended from foraging primates by local farmers. I examined effects of tourism and crop defense on stress-related behavior and fecal glucocorticoid cortisol metabolites (FGCM) in three groups of critically endangered, wild black crested macaques (Macaca nigra) exposed to different intensities of these disturbances in Tangkoko Nature Reserve, Sulawesi, Indonesia. I analyzed data from 33 adults of both sexes using General Linear Mixed Models. In general, behavior appeared to be inhibited and FGCM levels increased in months when greater numbers of tourists and more crop defense occurred in the forest and away from the groups. When tourists were present within groups, there was evidence of increased stress related behavior and FGCM changes indicative of acute stress. I tentatively suggest that the behavioral responses to tourists and crop defense resemble typical responses of primates to perceived predators posing varying degrees of risk. Although I found little evidence of potentially harmful chronic stress, it appears that even apparently well habituated primates may respond with subtle signs of fear and increased FGCM levels in ecotourism sites.
