The depiction of religion in television drama has changed considerably with the medium's shift to web-native streaming TV platforms like Netflix. New depictions of religion are more detailed, more complex, and more likely to include fictional performances of religious ritual, what Ronald Grimes calls "mediated ritual fantasy." Using processual symbolic analysis within a lived religion framework, I evaluate two mediated ritual fantasies of Netflix Originals, Elena Alvarez's quinceanera in season one of One Day at a Time and Matt Murdock's spiritual direction in season one of Marvel's Daredevil. I conclude that mediated ritual fantasies offer a promising field for exploring classic questions of ritual studies in a new media age; recent examples are rich in ethnic detail and demonstrate creative adaptations of real-world ritual forms.
